Keeping Kids Safe While Watching & Playing Online

iPads and YouTube are popular tools for learning and entertainment, but they can also expose children to inappropriate content, intrusive ads, or other online risks.

This page provides simple, practical advice and trusted resources to help parents and carers guide their children toward safe and responsible use of these platforms.

Please see links below.

Screen Time

The guidance recognises that digital devices are now part of everyday family life but highlights the importance of balance during the early years, when children's brains are developing rapidly. It emphasises that not all screen use is equal and that's how, when and why screens are used matters as much as the amount of time spent on them.

Key Messages for Parents/ Carers,

The guidance sets out clear, age appropriate expectations:

  • Children under two should avoid screen time wherever possible, other than shared activities that support interaction, bonding and conversation, such as video calls with family.

  • Children ages two to five, should ideally be limited to no more than one hour a day, with less where possible.

  • Screen use should be avoided at meal times and in the hour before bedtime.

  • Slow paced, age appropriate content is recommended, while fast-paced social media style videos and AI based toys or tools should be avoided.

  • Watching or using screens together with an adult, is considered more beneficial for children's development than solo screen use.

Education settings are not responsible for monitoring or policing screen time at home.

However, DSL's may find guidance useful when signposting parents to be trusted, evidence based advice, supporting families who are seeking reassurance or consistency and framing discussions about routines, sleep, behaviour or attention in young children.
